I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Who could ever forget the final scenes of the movie Titanic where a little old lady climbs the railing of a ship and lets a beautiful blue diamond slip through her fingers into the waves below. That diamond, called the Hope diamond is the basis for this story, Cartier's Hope. Cartier has opened a new store in New York, his biggest selling point being the Hope diamond. The diamond has a seemingly evil history of bad luck for anyone who touches it. Cartier inflates this history to draw more interest, and also more money, to the sale of the stone. Vera Garland belongs to high society, but longs to make a name for herself as a reporter by the name Vee Swan. She starts to investigate the history and rumors of the Hope diamond in order to expose Cartier as a fraud. Part history, part fiction, this is a fascinating look into the early 1900s, the divide between rich and poor, and the fight for women's rights and equality.

The story altrrnates between Catriona and Rachel, the mother of the missing girl, Holly. When a new family moves to town with a girl that looks exactly like Rachel's missing daughter, she becomes obsessed with finding out the truth.
I thought I knew what would happen but there wasn't enough book left then bam, plot twist! I definitely didn't see that conclusion coming! I plan to grab the other books written by this author!

Given priveledges that the other women in the camp lack, she uses her influence and extra food rations to help her friends to survive. But upon her release 2 years later, she is charged by the soviets for sleeping with the enemy and sentenced to 15 years hard labor in a Siberian prison camp. After a friend becomes injured, a doctor notices Cilka's skills with language and first aid and offers to train her as a nurse.
I loved Cilka in the Tattooist of Auschwitz and I was so excited to review this book and learn more of her story. The things she witnessed and endured are just heartbreaking.
